Update on Mia the Flatcoat Retriever at 8 months

gundog puppy flatcoat retriever training

Our Flat Coated Retriever, Mia, is making good progress. She has been trained using The Tessleymoor Way (of course), building bond and focus for the first six months. We have kept her predominantly on the lead and with this inner circle training, that strong bond has been established.

It was good to use her to help with a lesson today. The client needed building up and to see what’s possible. As a young dog, she was excited and a bit giddy when I first got her out of the vehicle. She did settle and was able to demonstrate a retrieve with delivery to hand. I have not worked too much on steadiness with her yet but her focus was on me.

Crucially, Mia did not run over to the client or her dog. This is a good demonstration of social distancing, something we need to encourage in our dogs in the long-term. It’s good manners to train your dog to keep their distance and lockdown is an illustration of what this should look like.

Flat Coats are slow to mature and we have a long way to go with Mia’s training. different dogs need different methods of correction and Mia is still learning. I’m looking forward to seeing her progress over the months to come.
