Residential Gundog Training with Madhbh the Flatcoat Retriever

Madhbh is a beautiful young working Flatcoat Retriever that is being trained as a working dog but only for the mental and physical stimulation of the breed and not for the shooting field. Her character is one of drive and passion, wanting only to please, it also come with a neediness to want constant human contact which has proven a fun experience whilst she’s resided with me for gundog training.

Madhbh’s training programme throughout her stay has been structured, ensuring that the basics are achieved before moving on to the next exercise. Many people rush their training, working on an exercise 6 times and moving on. It’s important to remember that your basic training needs to be repeated everyday to ensure consistent results are achieved. Her progress throughout has been rewarding for Madhbh and myself and her focus on training can never be faulted.

Residential training always brings up many stories and experiences with clients dogs which sometimes I think about writing a book about. Madhbh’s stay certainly has many twist in her journey but one I will always remember is when I’d locked her away and whilst training a dog on my grounds I saw in the distance a black dog racing down the lane, yes it was Madhbh. She had managed to work out how to get out of the kennel and find me. Ok finding me wasn’t hard as she could here the whistle from the kennel block. After that event I tightened up her security almost like Alcatraz.

Madhbh has been a pleasure to train, may people say owning a Flatcoat is hard, I say it’s a fun journey one that you have to be patient with. Caomhie my Flatcoat is only 2 and still maturing, it’s said that Flatcoat’s don’t mature until 3 but when they do you’ll have the royalty of the retriever world in the pack.
