Residential Gundog Training with Jazz the German Shorthaired Pointer.

Jazz is an 18 month old German Shorthaired Pointer who I met 2 weeks ago for a gundog training assessment.  Jazz is owned by Brian who is also involved with flying birds of prey.  When purchasing Jazz, Brian’s initial thought was to man the dog up to the bird so that he could use Jazz for hawking, however due to personal commitments this was not possible.  Brian has now decided to train Jazz into becoming his working companion and possibly down the line may encourage Jazz to work with him and his Harris Hawk.

On initial assessment it was clear that Jazz has a lovely a character with a strong desire to work.  Her ranging is good and whilst she is unable to quarter and lacks any command structure, she certainly has the potential to become a great working dog.  Brian booked Jazz in for 2 weeks of residential training in order for me to work on some of the basic commands that are required to initiate the working bond between Brian and Jazz.  Jazz arrived yesterday for her two week intense training programme and has settled in well.  She is well natured and has a great character.  I am looking forward to working with her over the next 2 weeks and will be writing regular blogs as she progresses.
