Caoimhe is a 8 month old Flatcoat Retriever that’s certainly a challenge for her owner Diane who has owned Flatcoats for many years.  Diane has never experienced such behavioural problems in the past and after a few 1-2-1 dog obedience training lessons with my sister company dog-training4u, Diane was still finding the challenge hard to overcome.

Diane called and arranged for Caoimhe to attend residential gundog training to help with the correction of behavioural problems and to instil basic training such as heel work, recall and focus work.  Caoimhe is showing huge working potential withj a strong desire to please it was decided I’d focus her mental stimulation around a core gundog training programme.

Originating in the mid-19th century in England, the Flat-Coated Retriever gained popularity as a gamekeeper’s dog. Part of its ancestry is thought to have come from stock imported from North America from the now extinct St. John’s water dog, but this is unverifiable. Canadian seafarers are thought to have brought Newfoundlands to British ports, and they factored into the ancestry of the Flat-Coated Retriever. Collie-type dogs may have been added to increase the breed’s trainability along with the Newfoundland for strength and Setter blood for enhanced scenting ability. The first examples of the breed were introduced around 1860, but the final type was only established 20 years later

Caoimhe certainly enjoyed her residential stay and when Diane collected her it was clearly evident that she had huge potential demonstrating what she’d learnt.  The most important part of training Caoimhe moving forward is calmness and patience which is something Diane needs to work on.

Follow on from residential gundog training Caoimhe is booked in for 1-2-1 lessons and further dog obedience classes to ensure regular training is achieved.
