A Puppy for Christmas

Think before buying a puppy Christmas

It’s that time of year again but of course, 2020 has been the year of the puppy. If you are still waiting for a puppy or perhaps always planned to get a puppy for Christmas, you may find the situation has changed throughout the year. Puppies are still selling for crazy prices, with demand outstripping supply. My advice would be to take a breath and wait until this crazy situation has calmed down.

If you have a puppy reserved, do think very carefully about what you are taking on. This especially applies to first time dog owners. Puppies are cute but they don’t stay as little bundles of fluff. They grow into adult dogs, sometimes great big adult dogs. Whichever dog you choose, they will need your time and money every day. They will also need many months of intensive training before you arrive at the dog you originally imagined you were getting.

Think About Your Older Dog

I am speaking to many experienced dog owners who have brought a new puppy as a companion for an older dog. Once again, I would urge caution. Does your older dog really want to live out their days with the energy of a new puppy in the house? This is not about you finding a replacement for a much loved companion, it’s about their quality of life in their last years. Perhaps instead of a puppy for Christmas, wait until the time is right for all members of your household.

If you do get a puppy for Christmas, make sure you are ready.
