I’ve been training Kimi for a while now. He belongs to the owners of Honeywell’s, my local farm shop where I am a frequent visitor. This week, Susan also brought along junior dog handler, Oscar, for the lesson.

I firmly believe that children should be involved with the training of any dog within the home. Establishing a bond of mutual respect helps children understand how to look after this member of their family. Also, using basic commands establishes that the younger members of the family are not playmates but pack leaders.

I involved three year old Oscar in the lesson from the start. He helped Grandma and even undertook some retrieval training himself. From the feedback I have received from Oscar’s mum, he thoroughly enjoyed the lesson and is keen to come again. I am happy to have a junior dog handler of any age attending lessons and look forward to seeing Oscar’s skills progressing when he accompanies Grandma in the future.
