Importance of Consistency with Bonnie the Springer Spaniel – Gundog Training
Training any dogs requires time and commitment but when you’re training a working dog it’s important to remember the greater need for consistency.
Bonnie is a 2 1/2 year old Springer that at the age of 6 months started to run off and free hunt. Over the last 6 months Bonnie and her owners have attended 2 lesson which unfortunately they’ll agree isn’t enough. Progress is therefore slow and with their aim to be walking in the fells with Bonnie off lead it’s important to push on with her training. After 4 months off I today assessed where Bonnies training is at. For the majority of the lesson I was able to engage and hunt Bonnie to the whistle but then for a split second she was off across my fields. After a few minutes Bonnie was back but obviously thats no good especially as they want to walk out with her.
We’ve agreed over the coming month to focus on intense training. Bonnies is a great dog that if trained to work will engage and focus without the desire to run.
