Gundog Training with Ted the Labrador and correcting previous negative training methods.

In my profession I meet many people who are either new to training or have had many years experience in owning a dog.  It’s also sad when I meet people who’ve experienced very negative training methods and today was another of those days.  Whilst it’s been a very productive and positive outcome day it was also a time to reflect and ask why do people/trainers resort to old school force training methods.

Today I met a lady who over the years has been attending 1-2-1 gundog training with another trainer but in the main has been involved with another local gundog club.  When she enquires a week ago she was feeling down and despondent about the future of her black Labrador Ted.  The methods that her trainers had inflicted and had been told to use had created a nervous dog.  Ted at one point would not recall to his owner, through fear of chastisement.  This old school method of training is not required and is something I’d never condone.

Today I was able to demonstrate how we could get Ted to be a happy and confident dog in the field, more importantly I was able to get his owner to feel positive and smile.

I’m looking forward to helping re build the bond and to create a dog that will be happy in the shooting field.

It’s always important to remember that training a dog is about building a bond, create the bond and the rest will fall into place.
