Gundog Training – Patience is the Key to Success
Today’s lesson with Bella was amazing and I even had smiles of joy from her owner. Training and correcting any bad behaviour is about patience and time, especially when you’ve created the problems yourselves. Before attending 1-2-1 lessons and a residential training programme Bella would run off chasing birds, ignore basic commands and excessively pulled on the lead. That’s not the case now.
Over the course of our training theres been many occasions where Carly has thought she’d have to re-home her. Life owning Bella was stressful. I kept reminding Carly that you’ve created the problems so together we have to work to correct them. Thankfully patience and consistency has paid off.
When Bella left residential training I’d instilled many disciplines and over the course of our follow up 1-2-1’s I’ve been able to increase her training and focus on us. Today’s lesson we had Bella quartering/hunting and stopping to the whistle. I think the crowning moment was her sitting up and watching the birds fly over, previously she’d have chased them for fun.
Training your dog never stops, everyday is a new learning day and it’s important to remember that. Take you foot of the gas and you’ll free wheel out of control.
