Gundog Training assessment with Ty the Springer Spaniel and Jay the Cocker Spaniel

Ty the Springer Spaniel is 16 months old whilst Jay the Cocker Spaniel is 8 months. Both spaniels have been running rings around their owners off lead and excessively pulling on lead, which makes taking them out un-pleasurable. Driving over 3 hours for their first gundog training lesson meant they wanted to maximise on the time, and what they observed next they couldn’t believe.

After only a few minutes with each dog I had them walking to heel on a loose lead, to the amazement of their owners. The next step was to show Sue and Malcolm how to engage with both dogs. Being working spaniels, it’s important to train and stimulate to their breed ability. After assessing each dog off lead I started to engage with them, teaching them to hunt and respond to the whistle. During our 2 hour lesson not only did I have them hunting and quartering, I was even able to stop them on a whistle.

Ty and Jay went home tired after thoroughly enjoying their lesson. I’m looking forward to seeing progression from all at our next lesson in a few weeks.
