Group Gundog Training

Group Gundog Training

Today was the start of a new advanced group gundog training class which is run in blocks of 4 weeks.  Today’s group consisted of existing clients that have previously attended advanced training but also other clients who have progressed through 1-2-1 gundog training sessions to join the more advanced group training.  The advanced group training takes place outdoors and I have been fortunate enough recently to secure some new grounds for use by Tessleymoor Gundogs, Gundog Training4u and the new Tessleymoor Gundog Club.  The new training grounds offer a variety of terrain which is coupled with good ground scent.  The area and grounds are rich with game and currently hosts an existing shoot which makes the training more challenging and exciting for advanced working dogs.

The most important thing when training and working your dogs is to build up a good trusting relationship and bond.  When asking a dog to retrieve at 200 or 300 yards away, stopping them and working on direction does not happen through dictating but rather through a good strong bond.  The relationship that we have with our dogs is vital when training and is reflected all the time when clients bring their dogs to training.  All my dogs are fully committed to work for myself and if clients are happy to follow the advice given then they too will have successful working dogs.

Today was another great days training and handlers showed their progress and dedication to training their dogs.  Something to remember when training our dogs is to remember that things happen through small steps.  On most occasions we will progress with our dogs training however there will be times when there will be signs of regression.  Today was a challenging day for some of the dogs but also a fun day.  Training that takes place with myself is fun and light hearted but at the same time remains structured.  The fun part for myself today was my little Cocker Spaniel Tilly, who came to me last November at 8 months as a little rebel.  Today Tilly decided that after working and being well behaved for 45 minutes, that she would parade herself around the arch of the clients with their dogs, weaving herself in and out before returning to my side as if she had not done anything wrong.  Whilst it was cheeky it is always good to remember that we need to find a positive out of training our dogs and therefore whilst she did decide to run around she returned to me with 100% focus and continued as a well behaved dog throughout the remainder of the class.

Classes are run on a regular basis so if you are looking at joining in with a fun, inviting, light hearted but well structured training class then why not give me a call or visit the Tessleymoor Gundog website at www.tessleymoorgundogs.co.uk for more details.

Tessleymoor Gundogs has also recently launched a new gundog club that has been designed to train all levels of working dogs and has exclusive benefits to all members including an online forum and loyalty cards.  For further information about the club or to join the club visit www.tessleymoorgundogs.co.uk.
