Group Gundog Training with Ronnie the Springer Spaniel update.

Ronnie the Springer Spaniel

You may recall previous posts about Ronnie and Reggie the black and white Springer Spaniels who are owned by Sheila.  Over the past 7 months, Sheila has been committed to training both of her dogs on a regular basis as they progress towards becoming successful working dogs.  Sheila has recently started beating on 2 local shoots and was keen to take her dogs as working companions.  I advised her against taking the dogs as I didn’t feel that either of the dogs were 100% ready for the shooting field.

Whilst both dogs are extremely stubborn, they have both progressed well with their training.  Despite their progress I have recently suggested that Sheila continues to train both of her dogs, however to put her focus into training Ronnie reading for the shooting season.  Whilst Reggie was well trained to the stop whistle, he lacks the drive to want to work.  Sheila already attends obedience classes with Ronnie and with focus on further 1-2-1 gundog training sessions as well as group gundog training she will be able to smooth off the rough edges and prepare him for the working field.

Since the recent change, there has been a major difference with Ronnie and great improvements were seen on Sunday at group gundog training.  Ronnie was never confident with the stop command however with dedication and focus from Sheila, it was evident today that they had mastered the skill when Ronnie responded well to the stop whistle, directional commands and retrieved the dummy to hand perfectly.

Well done.
