Wombleton Sheep Sale 2025 A Yorkshire Farming Tradition in the North York Moors
Wombleton Sheep Sale 2025 A Yorkshire Farming Tradition in the North York Moors
Late October in North Yorkshire always carries a sense of change. The mornings grow colder, the fields soften under autumn rain, and farmers from across the moors gather for one of the final major sales of the season. This year’s Wombleton Sheep Sale on 23 October 2025 was only my second visit since farming up here on the North York Moors, and it delivered everything a proper Yorkshire sale day should.
The day started in dramatic fashion. Rain lashed the yards, the wind cut across the airfield, and mud quickly became something you simply accepted. But as midday approached, the weather finally eased and the energy around the site lifted. The ring filled, conversations picked up again, and that familiar mix of excitement and tradition settled over the pens.
My neighbour Stephen and I took two loads between our farms, and from the moment we arrived we were greeted by plenty of friendly faces. These sales are more than a marketplace. They are where stories are swapped, knowledge is shared, and the farming community keeps its ties strong.
One of the highlights of the day was heading home with a new Cheviot tup for the flock. Anyone who keeps sheep knows the feeling. Choosing a tup is part instinct, part hope for the coming seasons, and part pride in bringing home something that will shape the next generation. With the sound of the auctioneer ringing through the air and the unmistakable scent of wet wool and diesel around us, it felt like Yorkshire farming in its purest form.
I spent the entire day in my Bushbuck Typhoon jacket from Pasturetec from 5 a.m. until 4 p.m. and it handled everything the weather threw at us. Wind, rain, cold, and the odd splash of muck did nothing to it. Days like this are when good kit earns its reputation.
A Brief History of the Wombleton Sheep Sale
The Wombleton Sheep Sale has been a respected fixture in the Ryedale agricultural calendar for decades. Held on Wombleton Airfield a former World War II base the event has long served as a hub for sheep trading across the North York Moors and surrounding lowlands.
What began as a practical local gathering evolved over the years into one of the key late autumn sales. Farmers bring breeding sheep, store lambs, and tups representing the hardy breeds of the area including Cheviots, Swaledales, Mules, and various crosses. The late October timing makes it one of the final opportunities to buy or sell stock before the winter months close in.
Despite changes in farming and livestock markets the spirit of the sale has remained much the same. It is a place where deals are still sealed with a nod or a handshake where neighbours catch up after long spells of busy work and where the traditions of Yorkshire hill farming continue to thrive.
Final Thoughts
The 2025 Wombleton Sheep Sale was everything a Yorkshire farming event should be. A mix of weather camaraderie livestock and tradition all set against the backdrop of the North York Moors. Coming home with a new Cheviot tup and a day full of good conversations made it an experience worth remembering and I have no doubt I will be back again next year.
