Consistency with your training

One common factor I encounter with training enquiries is the total inconsistency for commands and structure. So I thought I’d give you an insight into one scenario I’ve discussed about over the last few weeks with new clients.

I receive many call with problems of spaniels running off and free hunting. Lack of structures is evident on initial discussions and when I meet with the client and their dogs it reinforces what was discussed on the phone. Throughout the assessment lesson I reiterate the need for structure, boundaries and limitations, thus allowing the client to build up a structured bond with commands. BUT after the lesson for some reason I still get asked;

Client – “so then isĀ it ok to allow my dog to run in the garden on it’s own for hours”

Me – “does your dog chases birds and free hunt in the bushes”

Client – “YES”

Me – ” Well what do you think, seeing as your dog runs off chasing birds in the fields with no recall”

Obviously the answer is no it’s not acceptable. This just shows that no matter how big the problem is people struggle to grasp the concept for the need to ensure a good balance of commands, boundaries and love is achieved.

If you need help with recall, focus or any training feel free to call and discuss.
