Cold game training with a young Springer Spaniel

Teaching your young dog to retrieve game has to be timed right. If you haven’t achieved a clean and enthusiastic delivery of a dummy/retrieve article then your dog isn’t ready. You certainly do not want your young dog mouthing the dummies on their return as this will only encourage hard mouthing and result in damaged game.

Today’s lessons all involved cold game training in anticipation of the 2018 shooting season commencing with the Glorious 12th in August. Whilst waiting for my clients to arrive I decided to see what my 6 month old Springer Spaniel would make of retrieving game. I’d already worked Islay on fur and her delivery and enthusiasm was 100%. As you can see from the photo she didn’t disappoint. It was a beautiful clean delivery and the only one I did. Always end on a high!

The whole days training was a huge success and I was certainly beaming with a huge smile and satisfaction from my girls achievement.
