A New Home For Wisp: Why It’s The Right Time To Let My Fully Trained Springer Spaniel Go

14 week old Wisp at a gundog training demonstration

Wisp at 14 weeks!

Today Wisp, my nearly three year old Springer Spaniel, flew the nest as a fully trained working dog to her new home on the Isle of Wight. Wisp came to me at eight weeks old and throughout her gundog training journey, her character has never ceased to amaze me. Wisp was not the easiest of dogs but her bond and dedication to me were never in question.

So why am selling this great dog? I am letting Wisp go both for her benefit and her new owners. Whilst Wisp was a good dog, she liked to work in smaller packs in the shooting field. I could never fault her ability, whether it be training, demonstrating or shooting but working with a smaller pack will suit her.

You might think it’s my job to train dogs and move them on but I could never let a great dog like this go lightly, or without knowing everything about her future owners. Wisp has gone to a good home where she will be loved. Her new owner is a great guy whose young son is suffering with terminal cancer. To talk with a guy who has so much admiration and love for his son, knowing he has just weeks left, is incredibly powerful and heart warming. This is exactly why I know it’s right for both of them. Wisp will work on his shoots and become a great companion to help through these difficult months ahead. This is totally the right thing to do.
