Achieving trust and respect from our dogs.
Earning trust and bond is a big thing with our dogs and today my dogs showed me that.
Whilst out hunting and quartering my spaniels today, Nell my Springer Spaniel got caught half way in an old iron gate. Nell is my rescue dog and over the last 13 months our bond has grown to an inseparable connection. Our human instinct is to panic, but panicking would have only passed my worries to Nell. So calmly I sat all the other spaniels up, and then spent 10 minutes working out slowly how she’d managed to get stuck. Throughout the who’ll process my other 3 young spaniels sat patiently waiting. More importantly Nell didn’t wriggle or panic, she totally trusted in me. Eventually after sometime Nell was free.
Obviously it was a massive relief because firstly I was in the middle of my land acres away from my vehicle and if I was to need help it would have been difficult to find me. I certainly learned a valuable lesson, make sure someone knows where you are.
When I’m training my clients I always reiterate the importance of ensuring that basic training is in place such as steadiness and focus, that certainly was important today.
