Flatcoated Retrievers

I am seeing a rise in the number of people enquiring about owning Flatcoated Retrievers. I have owned and trained a number of these gundogs. We currently have Mia, who is eight months old and as you will see from this latest update, progressing well. It’s good to see a rise in popularity in these beautiful dogs again, as featured in the latest issue of Gundog Journal.

One of the reasons that Flatcoated Retrievers have fallen from favour is the rise in popularity of the Labrador. The Flatcoat is more challenging to train and matures later. Owners therefore have a playful and bouncy young dog for much longer – something that can delay use in the field. As the Gundog Journal article notes:

A common error people have when training Flatcoated Retrievers is that they compare them to Labradors, but it is important to remember they are two very different breeds. Where a Labrador can get itself out of problems, the Flatcoat seems more adept at getting itself into them.
