Man’s Best Friend: Megan

gundog labrador mans best friend

It’s a year today since I said goodbye to my princess, Megan. She was my shadow, we have the most amazing bond. She knew what I was thinking and feeling, as I did with her. They say a dog is a man’s best friend, well she was mine. Throughout her 11 years, she provided me with so much love and she took so much enjoyment in everything she did.

People don’t understand how and why I knew but two weeks before she died, I could tell she was reaching the end. No one else could tell; she hadn’t shown any signs of illness. Even a week before she died, I was working her as though she was a puppy – a client even commented that they couldn’t believe how old she was. Megs never let me down and I could see a look her eyes saying, I’ll keep going for you Dad.

The night before she died, she came out of her kennels and I could see that look of, I’m still here for you but I can’t carry on. I knew it was her time. The following day I took her to see my vet who’s a good friend of mine. I was still hoping she had a slim chance and asked for x-rays. The results showed four cancers. The decision we all dread was upon me. She looked at me with those eyes. Seeing her going to sleep for the last time was so hard but I knew she’d had the happiest life any dog could have experienced.

Everyday I miss her. She had a very special place in my heart and the bond was the best I’ve ever had with a dog. I see her everyday as the dog head silhouette on my Landi is of her. I know she’s looking down and missing me every day too, working and training together.

Build your bond with your dog, don’t bribe it or buy it. Only then will you have the relationship I had with Megan.
