Gundog Training with Maggie the English Pointer.
Maggie is an 18 month old English Pointer that has a huge working desire and continually pushes the boundaries for her owner, Helen. Pointers are known for their great hunting instincts and have a particularly strong sense of smell. This was evident when Helen arrived for the lesson however Helen remains committed to training Maggie to her breed standard. Helen obtained my details from the internet after following me on Twitter and keeping herself up to date with my stories and blogs that are posted on a regular basis. Helen desperately wanted some assistance with her training and needed help to reconnect with her dogs. Helen travelled 90 minutes for her lesson as she firmly believed that the journey would be worth it if she could learn how to start working with Maggie, but more importantly how to mentally stimulate Maggie whilst out on walks.
During the lesson Helen was able to see how I could engage with Maggie whilst working her on some basic gundog training. Sometimes simple relaxation and thoughtlessness allows the dog to connect better with yourself. Maggie was totally focused on me throughout the lesson and therefore lost re desire to run off.
I have set a number of training tasks which I believe Helen and Maggie can both enjoy (once Helen sorts out her co-ordination problems). I look forward to seeing their progress when they return for another lesson in a few weeks time as they prepare to advance in their training programme.
