Update on Callie the Springer Spaniel’s Residential Gundog Training

Residential Gundog training with a springer spaniel

Callie arrived just under 2 weeks ago for residential gundog training after previously experiencing negative training from another trainer. (Please read previous blog post Callie Gundog Training )

Callie arrived confused and nervous which was from her past training experience. Rob has tried to encourage her but by dwelling on the past, he’s added to her anxiety.

I’m happy to say that Callie is coming on well with her training, developing confidence everyday. Her enthusiasm to want to work is amazing and by using this energy I’m able to tap into her confidence and ensure she’s a happy working girl. One area that has let her down is Rob allowing the kids to play ball, this has created an habit of Callie retrieving the ball and returning only to either drop and step back or play with the ball on the ground. This has effected all retrieves so we’ve a lot of work to put to ensure she’s delivering perfect to hand.

It’s unfortunate that in the training world there are trainer that condone the use of force and punishment to try and achieve the results they want. It’s unacceptable! Training your dog should be rewarding for both of you, so remember stay focussed and positive. I always like to say “always find a positive out of a negative”.
