Cold Game Gundog Training with Springer Spaniels.
Today’s training focussed on cold game retrieving with my clients dog Mitsy the Springer Spaniel and my Spaniels.
Mitsy is Jenny’s new addition after suddenly loosing Molly her Cocker Spaniel at a very young age. Mitsy is a cracking young dog that shows great promise to work in the shooting field. Having trained all Jenny’s families dogs at some point, it’s a pleasure to see Mitsy today and help get her ready for this weekends annogoral first days shooting. Jenny has followed my training from when we trained Molly which has instilled great foundation and more importantly a fab bond.
It’s always daunting attending your first shoot, but as Jenny has worked Molly previously she’s familiar with the routine. As Mitsy had never retrieved game before and associated the shootgun with a positive I needed to help with getting her ready. The lesson was a huge success, Mitsy was steady and retrieve all the game I presented to her, even if she did have a little struggle on the big birds. One area Jenny need to focus on is hunting as Mitsy is to hand and handler depended, always looking up and not keeping her nose to the ground. After a few tips Mitsy was hunting hard and with a day’s experience on the shoot I have no doubt she will find her nose and work hard.
Good luck to them both this weekend and we hope to have an update posted on their progress.
