Residential Gundog Training with a English Pointer.
For anyone who’s owned a Hunt Point Retrieve dog (HPR) you’ll know how stubborn and hard they can be to train. They are known for almost being human with velcro behaviour to their owners, thus sometimes creating separation anxiety. Granted not all are the same but if you guide your puppy incorrectly in the early stages then you are almost garuanteed you’ll experience some behavioural problems. This is certainly the case with Sam the 10 month old English Pointer.
Sam lives in a very rural area where as a puppy he was been allowed to free run over the moors. As he’s matured the distance he runs has increased significantly and on a few occasions he chased sheep, which is worrying for his owners. Sam lacks basic commands and understand of what his purpose is in life. Many times I say “we can kill a dog with kindness”, in fact this is almost the case with Sam because if caught chasing sheep it’s possible the farmer will shoot him.
Sam has now resided with me for just over a week and his training is coming along in small steps, positive steps but small steps. As he lacks focus on the handler it’s important I establish a good bond, followed by basic commands then into the advanced training. Fingers crossed for this beautiful boy.
